The final Pops concert of the 2009-2010 season delivers "Good Vibrations" with the quintessential Beach Boys-tribute band Papa Doo Run Run. The Grammy-nominated surf band will present Beach Boys favorites such as "Good Vibrations," "California Girls" "I Get Around," "Help Me Rhonda," "Barbara Ann," "Fun, Fun, Fun," and "Surfin' U.S.A.” As of yesterday afternoon, there were still seats available, but, selection is limited. There will be no rush or stand by tickets, according to the box office.
The Beach Boys' incredibly popular music included 36 U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and 56 Hot 100 hits, plus four number-one singles. Rollingstone magazine listed the group as No. 12 in the 100 Greatest Artists of All Times. And, according to Billboard, in terms of singles and album sales, The Beach Boys are the No.-1-selling American band of all time. So it's no wonder other bands want to play their music and emulate them! But arguably, the group to do it best is Papa Doo Run Run.
Formed in 1965, the California band that started as a Top 40 rock-and-roll cover band called "Goodie Two Shoes," Papa Doo Run Run quickly discovered its forte—they sounded just like The Beach Boys! That sound led the band members to surf-music icons Jan and Dean, and from 1976-1980, they toured North America with the duo. In the 1980s, Papa Doo Run Run graduated from Jan and Dean to The Beach Boys, and toured and recorded with members of the original band throughout the next two decades. The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the "Celebrity House Band" at Disneyland from 1975-90.
Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, the first part of the concert features the Symphony in more surf-soaked and sun-drenched tunes, including arrangements of Brian Wilson's "In My Room" and "Warmth of the Sun," as well as Elmer Bernstein's "Hawaii Overture" and a suite of music from the hit movie trilogy, "Pirates of the Caribbean." And to add to the fun, the concert hall bars will be offering special coconut martinis! (Be sure to order ahead to avoid lines at intermission.)
"There's nothing like the music of the '60s to create a wild time in the concert hall," says Maestro Kaufman, "and that's what the audience will experience with Pacific Symphony and Papa Doo Run Run at this exciting finale to our 2009-10 pops season. One of the great things about Orange County is life at the beach, and the sound of Papa Doo Run Run definitely brings the fun and excitement of surfing to life. It's going to be a real symphonic beach party!"
