Upcoming Events and Signups from the Seal Beach Recreation and Community Services Department – August 23, 2010

The City of Seal Beach announced the following activities, signup deadlines, and program information.

ART CONCEPTS AND FUNDAMENTALS

“Art Studio – Drawing and Painting” will develop a solid foundation of techniques in composition and a high level of art concepts including elements and principals, such as light and shadow, perspective and color, and design. Students will find confidence in drawing and an individual path for personal artistic expression. This is a 5 week class held on September 16th – October 14th from 3:30 – 5:30pm for ages 6 – 10 years. The session fee is $130 and a $25 material fee payable to instructor at first class.
“Open Art - Advanced Art Mixed Media” participants will create personal works of art, choose a subject and learn the fundamentals toward sound composition. In this highly creative art class students will work from images, drawings and designs of the imagination and are encouraged to explore any style and work in any medium. This is a 5 week class held on September 16th – October 14th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for ages 10+ years. The session fee is $140 and a $25 material fee payable to instructor at first class.
“Adult Open Studio/Painting” enhances your way of seeing and increases your own artistic style while acquiring the techniques of painting. Participants will understand spatial relationships, proportions, color value and light and shadow. Artists will work from photos or still life depending on their need and interest. This is an 8 week class held from September 16th – November 4th from 12:00 – 2:30pm for ages 18+ years. The session fee is $220 and a $40 material fee payable to instructor at first class.
All of these classes are held by Brenda Benveniste at the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina Drive on Thursdays.


ART IS LEARNING AND AN ADVENTURE!

In the “Artable Adventures” class, you will drip, drizzle, shake, scrape, swirl, spread, brush and squeeze. Early math, science and literacy skills will be introduced. The ages for this class are 1.5 - 8 years of age. There are two different sessions offered that are held from September 13th – October 11th. The morning session is from 9:30 – 10:30am and the afternoon session is from 12:30 - 1:30pm. Adult participation is required.
“Art and Literacy Adventures”, for ages 2 – 3.5 years, will have stories and create arts and crafts based on the story. The children will practice group participation with music and props. The session is held from September 13th – October 11th at 10:45 – 11:45am. Adult participation is required.
“Artable Discoveries”, for ages 5 - 6 years, is a fun discovery of how Artables is math, science, and literacy. Kids receive open ended experience from creating art. This session is held September 13 – October 11th from 1:45 – 2:45pm. Adult participation is optional.
“Arts & Crafts Adventures” will increase your child’s self-confidence and enthusiasm for creating one of a kind arts and crafts projects. A wide range of art mediums will be explored. This session is held from September 13th – October 11th from 3:00 – 4:00pm for ages 6.5 – 8 years of age. Adult participation is optional.
All classes are held on Mondays with Gina Latora. The sessions are 5 weeks with a fee of $47 plus a $20 material fee and at the Marina Community Center, 151 Marina Drive.


GYMNASTICS CLASSES

“Mini-Gym” is an introduction to gymnastic fundamentals, developing motor skills to serve as a prelude for future tumblers! A creative first class to develop strength and coordination in little gymnasts. Parent participation required. Gymnasts’ ages are 2-4 years. There are two sessions and each one is held on Tuesdays from September 14th – October 19th. The morning session is from 9:00 – 9:30am and the afternoon session is from 3:00 - 3:30pm. Each 6 week session fee is $54.
“Pre-School Gymnastics”, for ages 4-6 years, is structured to introduce floor work such as bridge, cartwheels, frog-stands and more. Gymnastics will also improve strength, balance and skills in this fun and fast-paced class! The six week class cost is $54 and begins Tuesday, September 14th – October 19th from 3:30-4:00pm.
“Gymnastics Level 1”, for ages 6-10 years, is a focused gymnastics class, working on developing strength for more advanced skills. Gymnasts will learn the proper and safe way to execute tumbling, while increasing confidence and coordination. A wonderful class for athletes and dancers as well! This six week class begins Tuesdays, September 14th – October 19th, from 4:00 – 4:45pm, the session fee is $56.
“Leaps, Flips, Turns, & Tricks!” is a new combination dance & gymnastics class designed for dancers & gymnasts looking to improve their skills & abilities. The gymnastic portion will be geared towards tumbling skills, such as backbends and handstands. Dance will be focused on leaps, jumps and turns, such as chaine, pique and pirouettes. Class is held on Tuesdays, September 14th – October 19th from 4:45-5:30pm for ages 7-12 years, with a session fee of $56.
All Gymnastics classes will be taught by Anne Pennypacker at the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina Drive. No class November 16th and November 23rd.


COME ON KIDS – LETS DANCE!!!

Instructor Anne Pennypacker invites you to enjoy a high energy class to learn street style dance and funky hip hop combinations and tons of fun! Everyone will be dancing to upbeat and appropriate music.
“Hip Hop” class is held on Thursdays, from September 16th – October 21st at 4:30 – 5:15pm for ages 5 – 12 years. Classes are held at the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina Drive. The fee for the 6 week session is $56. No class on November 18th and November 25th.


Hola Niño’s !

¡Vamos a jugar! Let’s Play! Children with all levels of exposure will be immersed in the Spanish language via a unique style of storytelling, puppetry, dance, music, and movement. The seasons provide the context for relevant and practical learning experiences. Everyone takes home lyrics and resources to continue the fun at home.
“Hola Niño’s” is designed for ages 2 - 5 years. Classes are offered on Mondays, September 13th – October 18th from 9:45 - 10:35am. The class fee is $65 for 6 weeks and will be offered at the Los Alamitos Community Center, located at 10911 Oak Street.


SPICE UP YOUR BALLROOM DANCING!

Geared towards students with some basic dance experience, ballroom intermediate is the class for you! Refine the basics and add more step patterns to spice up your dancing! Partner is not necessary. This class is for ages 18 years and older and will be held at the Marina Community Center, 151 Marina Drive for a cost of $65. Class will be held on Mondays, September 13th – October 18th at 8:30 – 9:30pm.


MUSIC & MOVEMENT!

Do your children like to sing, dance, listen to music, and play instruments? “Music & Movement” is designed to provide a positive, challenging, learning environment for children to blossom musically and personally. Program combines elements of Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly methods with traditional philosophies and musical education.
Join Danuta Klimczak in “Music & Movement” on Fridays, September 17th – November 5th from 10:00 - 10:45am for the 2-year old class and from 11:00 - 11:45am for the 3 & 4 year old class. The class is $75 for the 8 week session. Class will be held at the Seal Beach Senior Center, located at 707 Electric Avenue. No class on November 26th.


CALLING ALL MUSICAL THEATRE STARS!

Calling all entertainers! Casting now... Needed: creative students interested in exploring dance, acting, music, and song! Join Miss Anne and guest instructors in performing pieces from various favorite musicals. Students will learn musical theatre dance styles, while learning to connect acting and the emotions of the song to the choreography of the piece. Jazz or ballet shoes encouraged for class. Class is for performers 5-12 years.
“Musical Theatre Stars” 6 week class will be held on Wednesdays, September 15th – October 20th from 3:45-4:30pm, at the Marina Community Center located at 151 Marina Drive. The session fee is $56. No class November 17th and November 24th.


PARENTS AND TODDLERS – PLAY TOGETHER!

This is a new parent participation program that offers a “preschool” type experience for young children. Art, sensory experiences, music, language, motor skills, and literature, and inside & outside play opportunities will be available. The beginning of the class is free play inside with art and the remaining class time will include parent and children sharing. Participants should wear play clothes and bring a snack for your toddler to eat during outside play and discussion.
This six week class is offered on Wednesdays, September 15th – October 20th from 9:15 – 10:45am for ages 18 months – 3 years at Marina Community Center, 151 Marina Drive. The session fee is $92.


SENIOR DANCE CLASSES

Let’s get those feet moving right away in “Senior Ballroom Social Dance”. Learn the basics of Ballroom and Latin dance in this fun & friendly atmosphere! Refine the basics and add more steps to move you along. We’ll dance the foxtrot, rumba, cha cha, swing and more. Partner is not necessary. Classes are held from 10:30 – 11:00a.m.
YeeHaw! Its time for “Senior Line Dancing”. Kick up your heels and learn basic line dance movement. Class will move at a beginner level pace, breaking down fundamental line steps and applying those steps into the various line dances. Classes are held at 10:00 – 10:30am.
Senior Dance Classes are for ages 60 years and older and held for 6 weeks on Thursdays, September 16th – October 21st. The class fee for each session is $46. Classes are held in the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina drive.


HEY SKATEBOARDERS!

Skateboarding is one of the world’s fastest growing sports! Whether you’re just learning, ready to learn more advanced tricks, or just want to skate in our private skate park, Skatedogs skateboarding camp is right for you! Make new friends, advance your skateboarding skills and most importantly have fun! Camp requirements: signed Skatedogs waiver, skateboard, helmet, knee pads, & elbow pads. Camp meets from 4:00 – 5:30pm on Wednesdays starting September 15th – October 13th. Meet at Heartwell Park, located at 5801 East Parkcrest Street, Long Beach. The session fee is $125 and class is for ages 6 -13 years. All skaters will receive a Skatedogs T-shirt.


TINY TAPPERS AND BALLERINAS!

Noise! Noise! Noise! It’s time for happy feet! All little dancers love their tap shoes and this new class will focus on learning the fun rhythms and steps of tap in “Tiny Tappers”. This 6 week class is held on Wednesdays, September 15th – October 20th at 2:30 – 3:00pm for ages 3 – 5 years. The session fee is $54.
Miss Anne’s “Baby Ballet” class will dance and play as “Mommy and Me” with flowers, singing songs and playing instruments in this fun first class for future dancers. This 6 week class is held on Thursdays, September 16th – October 21st, 9:00 – 9:30am for 2 -4 years. The session fee is $54.
For our “Pretty Princess Pre-Ballet” class, the fun will be dancing magical ballet adventures. Little dancers can pretend to be the beautiful Swan Princess, Fairy Queen, Sleeping Beauty and more while they learn the basic ballet positions and steps in a fun creative environment. This 6 week class is held on Thursdays, September 16th – October 21st, 3:00 – 3:45pm for 4 – 7 years. The session fee is $56.
Bonjour, little dancers! Join Miss Anne in a magical adventure for “Petit Ballerina’s” in the world of ballet – plies, sautés, chasses, and more. Little ballerinas will be fairytale dancers as they learn the importance of pointing their toes! “La danse de la joie!” for 6 weeks on Thursdays, September 16th – October 21st from 5:15 – 5:45pm for 2 -4 years. The session fee is $54.
Each of these classes will be held with Miss Anne Pennypacker at the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina Drive.


ALL ABOARD THE TODDLER EXPRESS!

Climb aboard the “Toddler Express” on the fast track to learning in this center based mini-preschool! Join us for activities such as sensory stations, creative arts and crafts, learning games and bringing storybooks to life through puppetry. Children will learn socialization skills as they explore activities in a positive and nurturing atmosphere. New themes weekly for great fun! Parent participation is required and parents can share ideas and develop a support group.
This is a six week class and two sessions are offered, one on Wednesdays, September 15th – October 27th and one on Fridays, September 17th – October 29th both sessions are from 9:30 – 10:15am for ages 1 – 3 years at the Los Alamitos Community Center, located at 10911 Oak Street. The session fee is $68. No class on October 26, October 8, and November 24.


LET’S PLAY VOLLEYBALL!

“Coed Beginning Volleyball” will teach you to play volleyball. The basic skills of passing, setting, hitting, and underhand as well as overhand serving will be taught and reinforced in games. This class is for 10 weeks and is held on Sundays, September 12th – November 14th from 12:00 noon – 2:00pm for ages 9 – 13 years. The session fee is $140.
“Coed Intermediate/Advanced Volleyball” will fine tune fundamental volleyball skills while learning advanced skills. Learn middle quick-attacks, blocking, rolling, and jump serving. Must have prior volleyball experience in running a 6-2 offense, use a three step approach and be able to overhand area serve. Instructor’s approval needed to participate – Please email sbvbcmaria@yahoo.com or call (562) 430-1092. This is a 5 week session held on Sundays, September 12th – October 10th from 2:00 – 4:00pm for ages 12 – 15 years. The session fee is $110.
“Open Gym Volleyball” is co-ed and offered on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00pm. This program is for individuals wanting to play extra volleyball games on a recreational level. $4 per person is collected at the door. The gym and play is supervised by experienced volleyball professionals. Multiple courts are available based on skill level. Pre-registration is not required.
All volleyball classes are played at the gym on the McGaugh Campus, located at 1698 Bolsa Avenue.


YOGA FOR YOU!

“Hatha Yoga” is a series of gentle poses that stretch & strengthen your body; the breathing practices relax your mind. The combination brings your mind & body together to soothe the nervous system & bring you a sense of relaxation & renewal.
Classes will be held at the Seal Beach Senior Center, located at 707 Electric Avenue. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a sticky mat and/or beach towel. The 11 week class is held on Tuesdays, September 14th – November 30th from 5:30 – 6:45pm. Class is for ages 18 years and older and the session fee is $89.
“Yoga on the Bluff” will improve your physical being and your self-confidence. The purpose of this class is to reduce the barrier for non-traditional yoga students to practice yoga. This class will include basic instruction in yoga and an hour-long practice designed for people of all ages and ability. Please bring a blanket or yoga mat.
This six week class will be held by David Hennage at Eisenhower Park, located at Ocean Avenue and Main Street by the pier on Sundays from September 12th – October 17th at 1:30 – 2:30pm for 6+ years. The session fee is $50.


PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES!!!

Instructor Anne Pennypacker invites you to jump into the spotlight and show off your dance moves! We have dance classes for everyone!
Join us for “Pre-Ballet & Tap for students ages 3 – 4 years for 30 minutes from 2:00 – 2:30pm, “Ballet & Tap Combo” for students ages 5 – 8 years for 45 minutes from 3:00 – 3:45pm. Students will learn plies, shuffles, classic tap steps, leaps and turns. Dance classes are held on Wednesday, September 15th – October 20th; class fees are $54 for 30-minute classes or $56 for 45-minute classes.
For ages 6 – 12 years the “Ballet/Tap/Jazz Combo” is held for six weeks on Thursdays from September 16th – October 21st at 3:45 – 4:30 for a session fee of $56 to learn basic ballet and jazz warm-up, positions, technique, and funky upbeat dance routines!
Classes are held at the Marina Community Center, located at 151 Marina Dr. Jazz/Ballet/Tap shoes are required for the appropriate class.
