Upcoming Events and Signups from the Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department – August 20, 2010

The City of Los Alamitos announced the following activities, signup deadlines, and program information. To easily register for any of these classes, check out the www.OC180NEWS.com online registration instructions at the end of this article.

Coed Youth Volleyball

The City of Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department is now taking sign ups for Coed Youth Volleyball. Learn the skills and techniques of volleyball or sharpen your skills! Instructed by Recreation Department Staff, we emphasize sportsmanship and participation in a positive environment. Divisions include Bump (2nd & 3rd graders), Set (4th & 5th graders), and Spike (6th-8th graders). Practices will be held once a week at school sites beginning Sept. 21st. Assigned practice days and times subject to change based on coaches’ availability. Games for Set and Spike divisions will be played on Friday evenings at Oak Gym. Bump division will practice in small groups in a clinic style setting on Tuesdays with games on Thursday nights.

50th Anniversary Courtyard Bricks on Sale Now!

The City of Los Alamitos is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and as part of the celebration will be constructing the 50th Anniversary Courtyard at Little Cottonwood Park. Presented by Southland Credit Union, construction of the 50th Anniversary Courtyard includes trees, benches, a boulder, a time capsule and personalized engraved bricks. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The personalized engraved bricks are now available for purchase! Two brick sizes are available: 4”x8” brick includes 2 lines of engraving for $50, and 8”x8” brick includes 3 lines of engraving for $100. Your purchase will include placement of the brick in the 50th Anniversary Courtyard and a certificate authorizing your brick purchase.

The Recreation and Community Services Department will have a booth promoting the sale of the bricks at the upcoming Music and Movies in the Park on Saturday, August 28th at Laurel Park starting at 7pm. The booth will have samples of the engraved bricks and drawings of the 50th Anniversary Courtyard.

Los Alamitos Music and Movies in the Park

The City of Los Alamitos Recreation & Community Services Department is delighted to present the second Music and Movies in the Park on August 7th showing “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” at Laurel Park. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, friends and the entire family for a movie night under the stars! The fun will begin at 7pm with free art activities for kids and live music entertainment. The first 200 people will receive a chocolate bar that enters them in a raffle. The raffle will take place right before the movie begins. Available for purchase at minimal cost are grilled hotdogs from Revolution Church and fresh popcorn and drinks from the City of Los Alamitos. The movie will begin at dusk.

Remember to also save the date for “Disney’s UP” on August 28th at Laurel Park on the corner of Bloomfield and Katella Avenues.

Parenting Tools For A New Generation

The City of Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department welcomes back certified Parent Educator, Tova Pusl, and her class for adults called Parenting Tools for A New Generation. Tova takes a realistic approach to parenting and aims to share information and create a community of support for parents, family, and caregivers. For every parent who has experienced deep and overwhelming feelings of frustration and sometimes even anger, this class will teach you tools to help you meet your needs and the needs of your children. Topics include: emotional intelligence/literacy, brain development/child development, connection/emphatic communication, setting limits, and anger. Learn to focus on what lies beneath your child’s behavior and make conscious choices to connect with empathy and strengthen family bonds.
Fee for 4-week session is $98 + $2 processing fee. Additional $2 material fee is payable to the instructor. Classes will be held Tuesday mornings, 9:30-11:30am, Sept. 7 to 28. This class is for adults aged 18 and older; no children will be allowed but babies-in-arms are welcome.

Open Registration for Ready, Set, Go!
Fall Preschool Program

The City of Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department is still accepting applications for our popular parent participation preschool program, Ready, Set, Go! We currently have openings for the Tue/Thu classes, 9:00-11:45am for 3 year olds and 1:15–4:00pm for 3 & 4 year olds. This 14 ½ -week program, taught by beloved instructor Barbara Brown, provides an opportunity for children to establish relationships while experiencing a thematic hands-on approach to learning. Three yr. olds will develop language skills, cognitive, and gross motor development. Four yr. olds will make discoveries, solve problems, and think independently in a learning environment designed to capture their interest while progressing at their own individual pace. Parent involvement is required and includes assisting the instructor in at least four classes per session. Birth certificate required upon enrollment. Students must be age appropriate and potty trained.

Register now! Fee is $406 for the 14 ½ week session from Sept. 9 to Dec. 16.
