Freebirds World Burrito, a quirky restaurant in the city of Orange, is sure to be the most unique restaurant you ever step foot in.
The chain began as a tiny shop run by two “ex-hippies” in Santa Barbara, whose Freebird and Monster burritos were quick to lure in students at UC Santa Barbara nearby. Since then, their restaurant has grown into one with locations in both California and Texas.
Freebirds World Burrito is not like any other eatery - every piece of furniture is custom-made with sanded wood and bright colors, which compliment the restaurant’s fun and laid-back mood. Some may call Freebirds the Subway of burritos; rather than waiting for a waiter to take your order at a table, guests stand in front of a counter and ask for specific ingredients while watching their food get made just the way they want it.
Their extensive menu is sure to please everyone, with its four differently flavored tortillas to support one of four burrito sizes, after which the possibilities are endless - Freebirds offers many fillings, such as queso, carnitas, chicken, crispy fish, steak, various types of salsa, and more. Each burrito size comes with a fixed price, so diners are free to fill their tortillas with as much as they desire.
I’ve only been to Freebirds World Burrito once, and I’m hooked. My “hybird” (smallest size) flour tortilla held carnitas, refried and black beans, mixed cheese, tomato and a bit of rice, which turned out to provide an intense and juicy flavor. The quick food preparation definitely added to the experience as well.
Each burrito comes wrapped in two layers of aluminum foil, which seems insignificant, but Freebirds has made a custom out of recycling the clean foil and using it as interior decor. After finishing their meals, guests are encouraged to bend, squeeze, tear, and mold the aluminum foil into interesting shapes and leave it on countertops and shelves. The bigger your burrito, the more foil you receive - more foil leads to bigger sculptures, which are often displayed above the cashier counter or near merchandise.
Freebirds World Burrito’s fun ambiance certainly makes it an interesting place to eat, without sacrificing great taste or affordable prices. At Freebirds, you’re free to build your meal the way you like it.
