Monthly Orange County Employment Analysis:
This series of monthly reports comes out shortly after the state releases the California unemployment report, generally around the 20th of each month. Our unique reports are based on the state’s data and provide a ten year perspective on trends in OC employment.
This ten year analysis is necessary to properly understand OC employment trends because the county specific employment data released by the state is not seasonally adjusted. Thus, to report county employment numbers each month without considering the ten year seasonal history of each month, could lead to inaccurate conclusions.
For example, OC employment decreases in January every year. Most media outlets would just report OC January employment falls by say 20,000, because that would be what the state would report. But, without establishing a historical context, the reader has no idea if employment is doing well, or crashing.
The impact of the seasonality adjustment at the state level can be even more pronounced. In a month like January, where employment always falls, in seasonally adjusted numbers, if employment falls less than usual for January, the state will end up reporting employment increased. This happens even though actual employment was lower than the previous month.
For example, if statewide January employment compared to December is lower by 50,000, but the seasonally expected January employment reduction is 60,000, the state will report that on a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased 10,000. Since Most media outlets just report what the state puts in their press release, that’s what other media sources will write.
Not only will an actual drop in employment be reported by every other media outlet as an increase, the other guys will not even explain why a decrease is considered an increase. We get this right at OC180NEWS because we have invested the time needed to understand it and to develop our own historical data set from the state’s reports. Aren’t you glad you read OC180NEWS?
Another data set we track in this series of reports is the recovery from the Great Recession. In this analysis, we compare how well OC is recovering from the depths of the recession to the same data for San Diego, Los Angeles, and California in total.
With campaign season ramping up, we will be assaulted with political talk about jobs, or the lack of jobs. Rather than approaching this subject with ignorance of any actual facts, readers of OC180NEWS will have real numbers about this important issue.
All of the data reported in this series comes from the State of California. OC180NEWS has painstakingly compiled the historical data and presents these articles with information and analysis not available anywhere else. If you are interested in a good understanding of OC employment, these articles are a must read.

West Orange County Distressed Properties Report
Once a month, on the 15th of the month, OC180NEWS analyzes the distressed homes in Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, and Rossmoor. These properties include homes in various phases of the foreclosure process for both those homes which are on the market and those that are not officially listed as for sale.
The number of distressed homes is an important component of the local real estate market. At OC180NEWS we have compiled the recent historical data and present our unique analysis of this important data in this monthly series.

Monthly Online Job Posting Report
Each month at the end of the month, or in the first few days of the new month, OC180NEWS publishes an analysis of online job openings. This data, which comes from a non-government survey, covers 30 major metropolitan areas across the country.
Four of those areas are in California – San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Riverside.
Since today nearly all jobs are filled through online application processing, online job postings are an early indicator of how job creation is happening. This survey includes per capita statistics, so it can be used to compare the California cities with each other and with those in other parts of the country. For readers interested in where job creation is taking place, this monthly report is another must read.

West Orange County Monthly Home Sales Report
Right after the end of each month, before anybody else, OC180NEWS publishes a series of articles on home prices. These reports cover Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos and dig deeper into local housing prices than just a few top down statistics.
We focus on selling price per square foot, report the number of transactions, and even look at the details of specific sales. This report really tells what is actually happening with local real estate prices in a way that goes beyond most media reports. Reporting average total selling prices without considering the sizes of the homes sold can lead to inaccurate conclusions about market direction.
