One of the fundamental differences between an advertising supported site and a subscriber supported site boils down to quantity verses quality.
A site which pays its bills by selling advertising has one very simple perspective, namely, more is better. That’s the reason so many sites are cluttered to the brim with junk – even if this makes it harder to find what you are looking for on the page.
The economics of website business is not the slightest bit interested in how easy the page is to navigate. In fact, the more a reader is forced to wander around a cluttered web page looking for the item of initial interest, the more likely the reader will click on an ad.
At subscriber supported OC180NEWS, our goal is to make it as easy as possible for our readers to navigate our site. We have nothing to gain by tricking readers into looking all around the site just so they might increase their chances of clicking on an ad. We’ve even deleted most of the ads on OC180NEWS because they tend to get in the way of easy navigation.
The pages on OC180NEWS are uncluttered, straight forward, and easy to use. Further, there is a simple 3 level organization structure utilized throughout the site. After landing on the home page, there are only sections, subsections, and articles.
The five Sections (OC180NEWS Exclusive Articles, Los Alamitos High School, Local News For West OC, California News For West OC, and National/World News For West OC) are the first organizational level. Next, each of these sections has subsections. The Number and subject matter of the subsections varies depending on the Section. Each article is assigned to a subsection.
The home page displays the most recent 5 articles in each section, regardless of the subsections to which the articles have been assigned. Readers may click on the section titles and they will get a section home page which lists all subsections in that section, plus the five most recent articles in each of those subsections.
