Last Saturday was a big night for the 500-plus students who attended Los Alamitos High School’s Winter Formal 2012.
The dance, which was held from 8 pm to midnight at the Long Beach Convention Center, was Las Vegas-theme and was dubbed “Viva Los Alamitos”. To fit the theme, the dance provided poker and blackjack tables, photo-booths, a fortune teller, and an airbrush tattoo artist. The interior of the building was also decorated with objects and images such as dice, playing cards, and the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign.
Before the dance, many couples met at various houses or restaurants for dinner and photographs. Larger groups rented limousines and “party buses” for transportation to the convention center. Once eight o’clock came, arriving students could walk on a red carpet (and stop at the middle to take a free photograph with their dates) into the building, where they could vote for their winter formal king, queen, prince, and princess nominee choices. Students could also choose to pay a small fee to take group photographs with their friends in front of a Las Vegas background.
Separate from the entertainment room was the actual dance floor, which was surrounded by large tables and plates of snacks. At about 10 pm, members of Los Al’s Associated Student Body announced the winners of the winter formal court: Brett Beighton as king, Vanessa Seawright as queen, Kevin Gooch as prince, and Lisa Fast as princess.
The dance in its entirety was a huge hit with the students.
“The dance was a great way to spend time with friends away from campus,” commented Travis Baker, a sophomore. “There were great snacks, and the songs played on the dance floor provided great exposure to today’s modernized music industry. I feel like winter formal was put together very well by Los Al’s administrator and our ASB.”
“This year’s winter formal was the best dance I’ve been to,” said senior Alec Otto. “I loved being able to spend time with my date and also getting to see my friends. It was amazing.”
