Swimmer Missing In Strong Rip Currents At Surfside

On Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at approximately 1800 hours, the Seal Beach Lifeguard Department was notified of a missing swimmer in the area of the surfside beach in Seal Beach.

According to the initial report, four males in their early 20’s entered the surfline near the area of Anderson Street and Pacific Coast Highway. After experiencing a strong rip current, the young men attempted to exit the water. Unfortunately, three of the four men safely returned to shore.

Within minutes, a search began near the location where the young man was last seen. Within ten minutes of the initial search, approximately 25 lifeguards from surrounding coastal jurisdictions were in the water conducting a swim search. Seal Beach Lifeguards launched jet skis to assist in the search as well as boats and a helicopter from local lifeguard, police and fire agencies. Unfortunately the young man was not located and the search suspended due to darkness. The US Coast Guard will be conducting a search overnight using their helicopter and a boat.

At the time of this release, his identity has not been confirmed. Seal Beach Lifeguards will be working overnight and the search will resume in the morning.
