Aquarium of the Pacific Will host their fifth annual NOAA Day this Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This is the largest continuous NOAA outreach event outside of the Washington, D.C. area.

Aquarium guests will learn about what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) does for our nation and our world at this annual event. Exhibits will document how NOAA, a government agency, works to understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment to conserve and manage coastal and marine resources.

NOAA will also announce severe weather and environmental issues to the public during its West Coast event.

Presentations will explain how NOAA will use data from the newly launched NASA satellite NPP to prepare people for upcoming severe weather disasters. These weather conditions include tsunamis, wildfires, heat waves, floods, hurricanes, and blizzards.

The newly launched polar-orbiting satellite will help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration save lives and protect property as it captures data from the Earth's land, oceans, and atmosphere. The data is used by NOAA forecasters to detect the potential for dangerous weather conditions, days – even several weeks – in advance. The public can find out more about extreme weather preparedness and get a glimpse into other pressing environmental issues at the event.

The day will include interactive exhibits showcasing NOAA and its work in monitoring, predicting, and managing our nation’s natural resources in the western region of the U.S. The event includes a student art exhibit, films, displays featuring educational games, and interactive booths from NOAA’s line offices, including the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Ocean Service, National Weather Service, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Restoration Center, and Sea Grant. In addition to learning about severe weather, guests can find out about sustainable seafood and ethical fishing, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill restoration, responsible wildlife viewing, ocean observing systems, and can play the “Deep-sea Extreme Environmental Pilot” educational video game. The U.S. Coast Guard will also be present with “Coastie” the talking tugboat, Scripps Institution of Oceanography will feature its observing system, and guests can explore the Aquarium’s NOAA Science on a Sphere exhibit.
