As post election violence, demonstrations, and international concern all increase, U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher, Republican, 46 District of California, serving Seal Beach, says on his twitter feed, "now's the time for a regime change" in Iran. President Obama said in response to the post election clashes in Iran "I want to start by being very clear that it is up to Iranians to make decisions about who Iran’s leaders will be, that we respect Iranian sovereignty and want to avoid the United States being the issue inside of Iran."
The Associated Press and other news outlets are comparing the current upheaval in Iran to the early stages of the 1979 Iranian revolution. There is a continuing parade of questions about the legitimacy of the Iranian elections. Rohrabacher said "The fraudulent Iranian election has mobilized opposition to the Mullah regime; the U.S. should back them, now's the time for a regime change."
President Obama, on the other hand, said "My understanding is, is that the Iranian government says that they are going to look into irregularities that have taken place. We weren't on the ground, we did not have observers there, we did not have international observers on hand, so I can't state definitively one way or another what happened with respect to the election."
The National Iranian American Council, according to their web site, was formed in 2002, and is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the interests of the Iranian-American community. As a grassroots organization, NIAC is supported exclusively by the Iranian-American community and prominent American foundations.
NIAC posted the following in response to Rohrabacher's comment: "Rohrabacher has the honor and distinction of representing one of the highest concentrations of NIAC members in any district in the country, yet his comments are absolutely contrary to the overwhelming opinion that we have been hearing from Iranian Americans.
The desirability of Regime Change in Iran goes with out saying. But, even if the Obama Administration wanted to take the extreme step of directly advocating for Regime Change, there is not much the US could do to bring it about. The US is not even in a position to stop the Iranian nuclear program, it's hard to imagine, short of all out war, how we could cause an Iranian Regime Change.
