Boeing Wins Huge Aerial Refueling Tanker Contract – Local Impact Could Be Significant

There are about 5,000 people employed by Boeing in Long Beach who build the large four engine C-17 cargo planes. But, the U.S. Air Force doesn’t want any more of the advanced transports, so unless Boeing can line up more than expected sales to international customers, that work will come to an end in the next year or so. Yesterday the Air Force announced that Boeing won the two way competition for the next major airplane building contract – the new aerial refueling tanker. Does this mean Boeing’s people in Long Beach can stop building C-17’s and start building the tankers? Probably not.

Another First For Local Boeing Teams – Unmanned Space Plane Returns To Earth

When the so called Orbital Test Vehicle, X-37B, OTV, was launched last April, it was so secret nobody would say exactly what it was doing, what it was carrying into earth orbit, or even when it would land. But, land it did – safe and sound – marking another scientific/engineering milestone for our local Boeing teams.

More Voices Call to End C-17 Funding – Congressman Dana Rohrabacher Continues His Support

Beginning with the last Bush Administration, and continuing today, production of the Boeing C-17, which employs about 5,000 workers at the final assembly plant in Long Beach, has been the subject of an annual budget battle in Washington D.C.
Gates Continues to Pummel C-17 Defenders With Veto Threats—Round 6

Last week and over the weekend, the Obama Administration C-17 Challengers, led by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, continued to land blow after blow in the annual boxing match over the fate of the C-17 and the 5,000 Long Beach workers who assemble the big jets. The Obama Administration wants to end production after the 223 which are already in service or in the pipeline. Boeing, its friends in congress and everywhere else are doing everything they can to continue building the profitable four engine advanced airlifters.
