Before we know it, we imagine our little angel as a professional dancer. We see the crowd taking their seats, the lights go down, the music swells up, the curtain opens, and there in the spot light is our very own dancer. That is the Kirby (Killam) Wallis story. It all began with a four year-olds dance class, and now, a few dance classes later, she makes her hometown professional debut this Saturday on the Irvine Barclay Theatre stage.

Art Melendres� Cal 25 �One Time� took top honors in the Cal 25 Regional Championship Sunday under sunny skies and changing breezes of 5-13 knots in this classic regatta hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club.
But contrary to the boat�s name, he finished first more than one time dominating the weekend with four first-place finishes in the five-race regatta.

Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today warned consumers � especially pregnant women and the parents of infants and young children � not to eat Raquel�s brand hummus salads, wraps, sandwiches and other food items. They may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacteria that can cause serious health problems. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this problem.

With a five fold increase in reported Whooping Cough cases year over year, the California Department of Public Health is putting out the alerts and expanding the recommended vaccination schedule. �In particular, all family members and caregivers of infants should get the booster vaccine,� said CDPH Chief of the Center for Infectious Disease Dr. Gilberto Chávez, who also is the state�s epidemiologist.

Last month, while attending UCLA summer school, former Los Alamitos High School football player Shaquille Richardson was among three incoming UCLA freshman football players arrested on suspicion of felony theft. About a week later and before any decision about filing charges was made by the Los Angeles County District Attorney�s Office, all three were kicked out of UCLA and dismissed from the team.

Last week, Seal Beach Life Guard Chief Joe Bailey made his annual sting ray presentation at the City Council meeting. That routine presentation happened to coincide with an uptick in the numbers of sting ray injuries both in Seal Beach and in San Diego. As a result, Seal Beach, dubbed by some pundits as the Sting Ray Capitol of the World, got a lot of press attention last week. We asked Chief Bailey about beach safety and if the sting ray action was unusual.
